Local Medical Assistance Recipients Receive Scholarships
to Continue Their Education

June 1, 2009
Harrisburg (PA) –
Sixteen Medical Assistance recipients from Dauphin, Lancaster, Berks, Lehigh, Northampton and York counties recently received $2,000 scholarships from AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan to further their education. The recipients, all AmeriHealth Mercy members, were recognized at an awards banquet held on May 28 in Harrisburg.

“We are honored to celebrate the accomplishments of these individuals, and contribute to their continued success,” said Sherry Knowlton, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan.

The Member Scholarship Program is funded by contributions from AmeriHealth Mercy’s employees, many of whom attended the event. This year, Burman’s Medical Supplies of Brookhaven, Pa., also generously contributed to the fund.

The program provides assistance to the health plan’s members who need help paying for their education, including recent high school graduates and non-traditional students. Many of the scholarship recipients have overcome obstacles in pursuit of their dreams, including severe illnesses and disadvantaged backgrounds.

“This is a special event for AmeriHealth Mercy associates because the scholarship recipients inspire us,” said Anne Morrissey, president, Pennsylvania Managed Care, AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan. “They inspire us with their determination to overcome adversity, and their persistently positive attitudes in the face of obstacles.”

AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan created the Member Scholarship Program in 1988 to extend support to its members beyond traditional health care services.  Over the past 21 years, the scholarship program has awarded more than 700 scholarships to members in the Lehigh/Capital and Philadelphia areas, totaling just under $1.5 million.
