AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan Participates in Campaign to Run Drugs Out of Reading
Reading, PA - The results of a recent PRIDE survey of 7th and 8th graders in Berks County was sobering news to community residents. The PRIDE survey serves as the official measure of effectiveness for the White House drug policy. The following statistics are results from that survey:
- 47% of youth surveyed used alcohol in the past year.
- 13% of youth surveyed used tobacco in the past year.
- 22% of youth surveyed used other drugs in the past year.
In response to these results, the Community Alliance & Reinvestment Endeavor, Inc., (C.A.R.E.) is sponsoring a "Run Drugs Out of Reading" 5K Run and Family Fun Day on Saturday, October 16. This event is part of C.A.R.E.'s Youth Ending Substance -abuse program (Y.E.S.).
AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan is partnering with C.A.R.E. to take a stand for a healthy, drug free community. Representatives from AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan will be available to distribute headbands, hats and valuable health information at the event.
The run begins at 10:00 a.m. at 3rd and Spruce Park & Pavilion in Reading. Highlights of the day will also include grab bags for all participants, medals for children, a 3-legged race, balloon creations, t-shirts, and free food and drinks.
C.A.R.E. is a faith based non-profit community development organization in Reading. The Y.E.S. program provides inner city youth with prevention education, cessation assistance, conflict resolution skills, drug free recreational activities, youth asset development, and youth leadership opportunities.
