Pedro A. Cortés to Speak at AmeriHealth Mercy Scholarship Reception

Local Health Plan Helps Members to Continue Their Education

Harrisburg, PA - AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan is awarding nine of its members a scholarship to help cover tuition expenses at an accredited college or trade school. All of these members are Medical Assistance recipients who live in Southcentral Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. To honor the recipients, AmeriHealth Mercy will hold a reception on Thursday, July 22, 2004, from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton, located at 800 East Park Drive in Harrisburg.

The evening's guest speaker will be Pedro A. Cortés, Secretary of the Commonwealth of the State of Pennsylvania. Recently, Secretary Cortés was named one of Hispanic Business Magazine's "100 Most Influential Hispanics in the United States" and was also recognized by the Central Penn Business Journal as one of the top "Forty Under 40" business leaders in Central Pennsylvania. With his years of committed service to education and socioeconomic issues, Cortés is in a unique position to talk to the recipients about how their education can change not only their lives, but also the lives of others.

In keeping with AmeriHealth Mercy's Mission and Values, the Member Scholarship Program was created in 1988 in an effort to extend support to members beyond the traditional health care services. The $2,000 scholarships are funded by donations from AmeriHealth Mercy associates and are awarded to AmeriHealth Mercy members who have committed themselves to continuing their education, and who have demonstrated a financial need. Since its inception, the Member Scholarship Program has awarded over $1 million to more than 500 members, in both the Lehigh/Capital and Philadelphia markets.

Headquartered in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with its corporate office in Philadelphia, AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan is a Medical Assistance managed care plan currently serving nearly 75,000 Medical Assistance recipients in Adams, Berks, Carbon, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Northampton, Perry, Pike and York Counties.
