17 Central, Northeastern Pa. Students Receive Scholarships from AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan Employees

May 26, 2011
Harrisburg, PA

Associates from the AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan (AMHP) gave their annual academic scholarships awards during a ceremony tonight to 17 worthy students from central and northeastern Pennsylvania.

The scholarships awarded through the AMHP Mission Partnership program are funded each year by AMHP associate contributions. The scholarships are awarded to students who live in the counties served by AMHP and are based on financial need and an essay written by the students.

"At AmeriHealth Mercy, we know that a healthy community extends beyond the basic definition of physical and mental health," Jay Feldstein, DO, Regional President of the AmeriHealth Family of Companies, said during remarks at the awards ceremony. "To be truly healthy, a community must have members who are educated, who have access to economic growth opportunities, and who support one another on numerous levels."

The Mission Partnership program takes place over a two-week period in February, during which associates contribute money to the Member Scholarship program. More than 800 scholarships have been awarded to students from Pennsylvania since the start of the program.

A highlight of tonight's event held at Harrisburg Area Community College was a speech by Angel Lynn Newson II, a four-time recipient of an AMHP Mission Partnership scholarship. Newson, who received degrees from York College and plans to pursue graduate studies, is now a teacher in the York School District.
